VAT & shipping

These settings affect orders and new customers when country and tax data are available from Shopify.

Recipient VAT zone (orders)

e-conomic draft invoices and sales orders often require a recipient VAT zone. The app resolves it in this order (first match wins):

  1. Advanced VAT zones — map country lists to e-conomic zone numbers
  2. Simple VAT bands — domestic country (default DK) → domestic zone; other EU → EU zone; else abroad
  3. Order default recipient VAT zone — single number from settings
  4. Linked customer’s VAT zone — from e-conomic when the buyer is linked
  5. Customer default VAT zone — from customer default settings

Enable only what your accountant needs. Advanced and simple are optional; many shops use simple bands or a single default.

Simple VAT bands

Setting Purpose
Enable simple VAT zones Turn on country-based bands
Domestic country Country treated as domestic (default Denmark)
Zone numbers Domestic, EU, abroad, and optional domestic-without-VAT

Domestic without VAT can apply when the Shopify order or customer is tax exempt and the shipping country is domestic.

Advanced VAT zones

Setting Purpose
Enable advanced VAT zones Use per-zone country lists
Country map e-conomic VAT zone → list of countries

Advanced runs before simple bands.

Customer VAT (new debtors)

When creating customers from Shopify, VAT zone can be set from:

  • Address country (advanced/simple rules), or
  • Default VAT zone when no country or no rule match

Align customer defaults with order rules to avoid mismatches between debtor and invoice.

Shipping on order documents

Setting Purpose
Add Shopify shipping as lines Append one document line per Shopify shipping line
Default shipping product number e-conomic product used for shipping lines
Shipping product by code Map Shopify shipping method code to a product number

Shipping amounts use net values after shipping discounts, consistent with product lines.

Shipping refunds on Shopify are not synced as separate credit notes (see What syncs (and what does not)).

Presentment currency

When Shopify includes presentment currency on the order, amounts and currency on the e-conomic document can follow the customer’s checkout currency instead of the shop currency.

Tips for accountants

  • Confirm zone numbers in e-conomic (Setup → VAT zones) before enabling advanced/simple maps.
  • Test one order per country band (domestic, EU, non-EU).
  • If VAT is wrong on the document, check shipping country and tax-exempt flags on the Shopify order first.
